Creative Technology Studios (Queens Building)

Yamaha Studio (Q1.29a)

Yamaha Studio The studio with the Yamaha D2000 digital mixing desk is primarily for module sessions and for self-directed study in sound recording, production, composition, the development of creative projects in general and band or large group recordings in particular. Dedicated effects units can be routed to the mix with help of an extensive patchbay. The playback system is connected to a 5.1 surround system as well as a set of stereo speakers. The studio is connected to Live Room A.

SSL Studio (Q1.29c)

SSL Studio Outfitted with an SSL AWS900+ analog mixing desk, this studio is primarily for module sessions and for self-directed study in sound recording, production, composition, the development of creative projects in general and band or large group recordings in particular. The playback system is connected to two sets of stereo speakers. The studio is connected to Live Room A.

Live Room A (Q1.29b)

CTS Live Room A Live Room A is surrounded by the SSL studio and the Yamaha studio and is large enough to record bands and small ensembles. The room is equipped with a dedicated microphone cupboard, including specialist drum microphones and industry-standard vocal and instrument microphones. A full drum kit remains in the room at all times, along with a variety of guitar amps, keyboards and sound-isolation baffles.

Avid Suite (Q1.26)

Queens 1.26 Outfitted with a Control 24 recording and mixing desk, this studio is primarily for module sessions and for self-directed study in foley, ADR, sound recording, production, composition and the development of creative projects in general. Playback is provided via a 5.1 surround system as well as a set of stereo speakers. The studio is connected to Live Room B.

Audient Studio (Q1.28)

Queens 1.28 Outfitted with an Audient desk, this studio is primarily for module sessions and for self-directed study in analogue sound recording, production, composition and the development of creative projects in general. Playback is provided via several stereo speakers to compare your mix. The studio is connected to Live Room B.

Live Room B (Q1.27)

Live Room B Live Room B is surrounded by the C24 studio and the Audient studio. Like Live Room A, this room is equipped with a dedicated microphone cupboard and moveable wall panels. There are two wall boxes, each connecting to the adjoining studio. The room is also equipped with a TV monitor for foley or ADR work.

Soundbooths (Q1.06)

Four individual sound booths provide sound-isolated music and audio workspaces. Each sound booth contains an iMac, an M-Audio Track Eight audio interface, a Novation Launchkey 25 MIDI controller and a set of stereo speakers.

Teaching and Workstation Lab (Q1.33)

Lab Workstation Designed to support teaching that combines lectures and lab activity, its Macintosh workstations can also be used for audio production and composing when not booked for teaching. Each workstation includes an iMac, Blackjack audio interface, and Novation Launchkey 25 controller. The lab also contains a Doepfer A-100 analog modular synthesiser, a 5.1 audio system, and audio test equipment.

Macintosh Lab (Q1.32)

Queens 1.32 Lab When not being used to teach classes, any of the 21 Macintosh workstations in this room can be used for audio production work. Though it is labeled a ‘video’ lab, it also contains a core set of standard audio-production software.

Radio Control Room (Q1.30a)

Radio Control Room The Radio Control Room is mainly used by DemonFM, but also for group discussions, DJ-ing, and self-directed study in radio production.

Radio Studios 1-4 (Q1.29d-g)

There are four radio studios to be used for module sessions and for self-directed study in radio production. Please note that Radio Studio 1 (QB1.29g) is dedicated for use by DMU’s radio station DemonFM.


Clephan Building

Courtyard Studio (Clephan Courtyard, CL 0.43/0.45)

The Courtyard Studio serves as a high-end creative production studio, a mastering studio, and a recording studio with a large live room and a double-isolated vocal/drum booth. It also supports advanced 8.2 and 9.2 surround-audio production and film and audiovisual composing, with large video monitors in the control room and live room.

Surround Studio (CL 00.02b)

clephan surround The Surround Studio supports composition, production and audiovisual work with stereo and 5.1 monitoring and a large-scale display. It is primarily used for module sessions and self-directed study in 5.1 mixing and work with moving image, composition and the development of creative projects in general.

The Project Studio (CL 00.02/00.02a)

clephan project studio The Project Studio supports 8-channel recording from a sound booth, plus stereo monitoring with ADAM S2A studio monitors. Students can develop their work using the given Macintosh workstation, or they can bring in their own laptop computers for finalising mixes on professional stereo monitoring in a sound-treated room.

Multichannel Studio (CL 00.16)

This studio is configured for 8-channel composition and audiovisual production. It also serves as a small-group classroom.

Rehearsal Studio 00.16a (CL 00.16a)

The Rehearsal Studio provides a large-scale sound isolation booth for group and individual music practice, tied to a workstation for general production purposes. Note that, due to traffic rumble from Oxford Road, this is not recommended as a tracking studio.

Performing Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE)

The PACE building was awarded to DMU for being centre for exceptional teaching and learning for dance, music, and drama.

PACE Studio 1 is the primary performance space used by the MAT programmes. This 16m x 16m room was acoustically designed to provide an outstanding, spectrally balanced venue for multi-channel diffusion concerts. The highly flexible room can serve as a white-wall space or a black-box space. Fully modular seating can be arranged as needed for specific performance, installation, or classroom needs. A Steinway Model-D grand piano, high-definition video projection and a full theatre lighting rig complement the extensive sound diffusion system, containing two stereo PAs (Meyer, APG) and an 8-channel surround Genelec system and supplementary dome configuration, expandable to 32 channels or more.

Be sure to confirm kit availability with Technical Instructors prior to your session. Note that the piano is usually locked.

PACE Studio 1a

pace1a The rehearsal space Studio 1a (PACE 0.02/0.02a) contains a stereo PA (Mackie), a mobile 8-channel mixing console, a Clavinova and two computer monitors. The room is designed to support individual and group bookings/rehearsals, but can also be used for personal study. It can also be configured for bespoke needs through arrangement with the Technical Instructors.

PACE Studio 2

pace studio 2 The double-height ceiling and full lighting rig of Studio 2 lends itself to interactive dance performance, installation art and research applications. Breakout rooms around the side of the studio allow for a mix of large-room and small-room activities.

Other Facilities

Music, Technology and Innovation Research Lab (MTIRL)

The MTIRL is situated in Clephan 0.19. It is the key research facility of the MTI Research Centre, for use by postgraduate students and research staff. It includes a large-scale diffusion/composition studio, a dedicated 5.1 surround studio, and a ‘Sound Art Lab’. More details are available on the MTI Institute for Sonic Creativity website.
